On Saturday, June 20, 2009, the 30-year old, his wife and their son were driving near the Wailua golf course when a crash took place that tragically ended Wesley's life. A collision occurred between a motorcycle and a big rig truck and the truck crossed the center line and struck the family's rental car. Both vehicles ended up in a nearby ditch. VanValkenburg and the truck driver, 25-year old Scott Aviguetero, were both killed. VanValkenburg's family survived. The wife and son were transported to the hospital and treated for their injuries.
The Kauai Police Department is investigating the crash.
